GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY SHOWS THE STRENGTH OF THE MARVEL BRAND
Guardians of the Galaxy has grossed 160 million dollars worldwide and 94 million on opening weekend according to Bleeding Cool (read the article here). Director James Gunn even wrote a thank you note to fans on his Facebook page. The film could have been a disaster for Marvel Studios. It was a movie that featured none of the well-known characters from Avengers like Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. It did have some star power though, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel (as the voices for Rocket the Raccoon and Groot respectively).
It had a great marketing campaign and proves that Marvel Studios is on its way to becoming quite a powerhouse in the film industry. A sequel to the movie has already been announced for 2017.
No Avengers. No Problem. Guardians grossed 160 million so far.
With their phase 3 movies in development with lesser known characters such as Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, this may be a sign to fans that those movies can succeed on their own without any big names attached to them.
