THE DC NEW 52 SUPERMAN: I MISS THE RED TRUNKS!!

As a fan of Superman I don't usually complain about changes made to the Man of Steel but I have to say, I MISS THE RED TRUNKS!!. I feel like the costume is very distracting with the constant blue. The red belt really doesn't help. They could've just kept it yellow and it would've had the same effect. The red trunks gave you a nice visual with the blue leotard and complimented the red boots and the red cape.

I wrote a blog about the changes that I didn't like about this new Superman when the DC NEW 52 was announced in July. You can read it here.

This New Superman will hit the mainstream when Henry Cavill appears as Superman in the new "Man of Steel" movie in 2013. We shall see how mainstream audiences react to these changes. They may not care, but as a long time fan I want to say: I MISS THE RED TRUNKS!!!

R.I.P. PATRICE O'NEAL

According to an article in the Washington Post (which you can read at this LINK), Patrice O'Neal died yesterday. The Comedian was 41. Patrice suffered a stroke last month and was unable to speak. He died from complications from the stroke he suffered.

Patrice O' Neal was a great talent. Anyone who watched his stand up special, "Elephant In The Room" or his segment on "The Roast of Charlie Sheen" knows how incredibly talented he was.

Good comedians can make you laugh at a joke. Great comedians can make you laugh and think about life as they state their observations on life. Like Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and D.L. Hughley, Patrice O'Neal was a great comedian.

RIP Patrice. Your brilliant mind and wonderful talent will never be forgotten.

DWTS: GOODBYE TO MAKS AND HOPE

So, Last night Hope and Maks got booted off Dancing with The Stars. It was no surprise. Hope came in with the lowest score at 49. Ever since last week, you could tell they developed an attitude that said,  "F' THE WORLD"  and accepted their fate.

Also she and Maks did challenge the judges on their scores and that was fun to watch.  I want to know when did Carrie Ann, Bruno, and Len become so revered that someone can't disagree with them?

I loved Hope and Maks because they said what they felt despite the judge's criticism. Hope worked hard and did a lot. She may not have been the most graceful dancer like J.R. or Ricki but you knew she gave it her all.  CONGRATS Hope!!! You are a true Champion.

Why is there a picture of Cheryl Burke on this blog you might ask?

Can you give me a reason why there shouldn't be?

I love Cheryl. She's as gorgeous and sexy as Halle Berry and can dance like Ginger Rogers. Hallelujah. Amen.

MY 3 FAVORITE NWA CHAMPIONS

A couple of weeks ago I listed my three favorite Intercontinental champions. Now I will list my three favorite NWA Champions:

1. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair

The "Nature Boy" has been a World Champion 16 times. Seven Times he was the NWA champion before Jim Crockett Promotions was bought by Ted Turner and became WCW. He had classic feuds with Dusty Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, Terry Funk, Lex Luger and Sting during the 1980's which cemented his legacy as arguably the greatest champion in the history of wrestling.

2. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

In February 1989, Ricky Steamboat beat Ric Flair for the NWA Championship. This was two years after his amazing  performance at Wrestlemania 3 where he beat "Macho Man" Randy Savage for the Intercontinental title and became a superstar. Ricky and Ric Flair would have a heated feud over the title resulting in 3 tremendous televised matches for WCW. With his heart and determination, Ricky Steamboat was a great champion no matter what title he held. In May of 1989, Steamboat lost the title to Flair but their impact on the sport is still felt today.

3. STING

Related image

Sting beat Ric Flair for the NWA World title in July 1990 at the Great American Bash. Since then he is a multi-time World champion defeating opponents such as Vader, Sid Vicious, Lex Luger, Ric Flair, and Hulk Hogan. His first world title reign cemented Sting as the Franchise player in WCW and as a major star in the wrestling industry.

With WWE and TNA switching champions like we change socks, it's nice to look at 3 wrestlers that made the World title mean something in an era when wrestling was fun and exciting.

R.I.P JOE FRAZIER

Image result for joe frazier

Joe Frazier has died after a short battle with liver cancer. He was 67. The former two-time World Heavyweight Champion cemented his legacy in his epic fights with Muhammad Ali.

After he retired in the 80's he also was a special guest referee at NWA Starrcade'85 for Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes and he was in the corner of Mr. T when he fought Rowdy Roddy Piper at Wrestlemania 2 in a boxing match. He also made a special guest appearance in the original "Rocky" movie.

Joe Frazier was a hero in a time when boxing was the sport of kings. He will be greatly missed.

CNN has a great article on the champion that you can read at this LINK.

BOBBY ROODE IS THE NEW TNA WORLD CHAMPION

This past Thursday on TNA IMPACT Bobby Roode became the new World Champion. During a great match with his former tag-team partner, James Storm, Roode picked up Storm's beer bottle and smashed him over the head while the referee was down from getting squashed earlier.

This action turned Roode heel and will probably be explained as an act of jealousy or a "need" to be the World Champion.

I think the angle was rushed but with Storm out with a concussion and Kurt Angle out with an injury and training for the olympics, TNA needed new blood at the top.

I like Bobby Roode and I think he'll be a good champion whether he's a heel or a face. I hope they give him a good moniker like, "The Franchise" just to show off his new cocky attitude. I'll be tuning in to Impact to see what the new champ has to say.

According to an article in the NY DAILY NEWS which you can read at this LINK, Charlie Sheen is returning to TV. Sheen will star in "Anger Management."

FX will air the series and it will begin production in 2012 and begin airing in the Summer. I think this will present Charlie with a new challenge and hopefully another successful sitcom. It will be tough to top the success of "TWO AND A HALF MEN" but I think Charlie can do it.

5 REASONS TO BUY BATMAN: YEAR ONE ON DVD

Hello Class,

Today I'm going to give you 5 reasons to pick up Batman: Year One on DVD:

 Origin of Batman
In 1987 Frank Miller wrote Batman: Year One and changed the way we see Batman today. From this book we see how Batman became the Dark Knight Detective. Miller gave Batman a reason to exist as Gotham City was so corrupt that it needed a Batman to give it hope. Without this book and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Christopher Nolan and Tim Burton would have had nothing to draw from for their films.

Origin of Jim Gordon
The animated movie like the comic book focuses on Jim Gordon, a former Chicago police detective who returns home to Gotham City with his pregnant wife. Jim Gordon is a cop who has lost faith in the system and hates the corruption in Gotham but refuses to be corrupted by the Gotham Police.

He finds an ally in Batman and the two begin a friendship that will bring hope to Gotham.

Action and Animation
For fans of Batman and comics there is a lot of action in this film and the animation is beautiful. All the characters pop off of the screen.

Catwoman
This movie also features the origin story of Selina Kyle aka Catwoman as a prostitute in Gotham with her young friend Holly. There is also a Catwoman animated short film written by Paul Dini (Batman: TAS and Superman: TAS) that shows Catwoman as a sexy and powerful woman and it has a connection to the Batman: Year One animated movie.

Eliza Dushku
Catwoman/Selina is voiced in the feature-length movie and the short by Eliza Dushku (Buffy, Angel, Bring It On!). ELIZA. DUSHKU. IS. THE. VOICE. OF. CATWOMAN. Need I say more? So Go Buy it!!!

This movie is definitely for teenagers and adults but also it's easy to understand whether you're a comic book fan like me or not.

If you like this blog tweet me @SEMSCORPIO at this LINK.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

James Storm

Last night at the TNA Impact tapings, James Storm beat Kurt Angle and won the World Heavyweight Championship according to ProWrestling.net. The title change can be seen on Thursday night on Spike TV(Check Local Listings).

This is a great thing as Storm is a credible wrestler who can cut a good promo and has been with TNA since 2002 and the fans love him.

Bobby Roode

TNA had been building to a set up where Bobby Roode would win the title at Bound For Glory but that changed when Hulk Hogan thought that Roode was not ready for the title run, according to PWInsider.

Marketing has been a huge part of wrestling ever since the 80's when Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon changed wrestling in 1984 with Hulkamania. From then on, every wrestler had to have a persona that was "Larger Than Life" in order to become the World Champion.

When Hulk Hogan said that Bobby Roode wasn't ready, it didn't mean that he couldn't wrestle or wasn't a good athlete. It meant that he didn't have a persona that was larger than life like Hogan's in the 80's.

The "Tennesee Cowboy"James Storm does and that's why he won the World title. He lives in the South, drinks beer and likes to have a good time. Fans can relate to that.

I don't blame Robert Roode, I blame TNA creative. They don't have the best track record for giving their performers personas that fans can buy into.

Four years ago Robert Roode was "Mr. Money"  and was supposed to be some guy who was rich due to investments. That didn't work because TNA didn't put any marketing into it such as video packages or Roode using his "money" to buy lavish things or embarass fans like the WWE did with the "Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase in the mid-80's.

Fans respond to a name that tells them something about a wrestler's persona or the way he wrestles. In WWE, Bret Hart was "The Hitman" or "The Excellence of Execution." As a fan when I heard that I knew exactly what to expect from Bret Hart.

Bobby Roode needs a name that highlights his athletic ability like, "The Natural" or "The All-Star."

Matt Morgan

Matt Morgan also needs a name that highlights his athletic ability and his arrogant persona. He's an intense big man who has a believable style where he can hurt you with a few moves because of his size.

But he is saddled with "The BluePrint" as his moniker. The name isn't as intense as Morgan and doesn't say "I'm the Best Big Man in this Business" which Morgan believes he is. I know Morgan came up with "The BluePrint" moniker but someone in TNA should have said that wasn't the best one to use. Morgan should use a moniker like "MVP" or "The Alpha Male" to communicate to fans what he is all about.

I've heard Hulk Hogan and Kurt Angle say that the talent need to "step up." Well I say TNA needs to write storylines and create personas that can make the talent larger than life and appeal to fans so they can step up.

MY FAVORITE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONS

(Courtesy of Google Images)

Hello Class,

Now that Cody Rhodes has brought back the Intrercontinental title used in the 80's and 90's I thought I would write a blog about my favorite wrestlers that held that title.

1. "MACHO MAN" RANDY SAVAGE
Related image

The "Macho Man" beat Tito Santana in 1986 with illegal tactics and became one of the fastest rising stars in WWE. While Hulk Hogan was the good guy champion everyone loved, Savage could be the villain people loved to hate but also one of the most entertaining wrestlers ever with his outfits and interviews. One of the great things about Savage was his interviews. Check out "WWE: Macho Madness - The Randy Savage Ultimate Collection" for some of Savage's best and most entertaining interviews. Randy Savage would go on to lose the Intercontinental title to Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania 3 in 1987. But it was the start of a wonderful career in WWE as he would win the WWE World title twice before leaving the WWE in 1994. We lost Macho Man this past May but he will never be forgotten OHHHH YEAHHH!!!

2. "MR. PERFECT" CURT HENNING

(Courtesy of Google Images)

Curt Henning beat Tito Santana in 1990 to become the WWE Intercontinental Champion. A former AWA World Champion, Henning was one of the best wrestlers of his generation. He set a standard with his technical ability and his cockiness that made every fan believe that he was "Absolutely Perfect." Many people when they think of the Intercontinental title, they think about Mr. Perfect.

  3. "THE HITMAN" BRET HART

(Courtesy of Google Images and WWE)

During his reign as Intercontinental Champion, "The Excellence of Execution" defended his title against everybody and anybody that wanted it. He is a two-time WWE Intercontinental Champion beating "Mr. Perfect" and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. In an era that celebrated big guys like Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior, that used their power to defeat opponents, Bret Hart was something different. He used his intelligence and skill to break an opponent down and subsequently make them submit to the Sharpshooter. I became a fan of Bret Hart when he was the Intercontinantal Champ because Bret Hart made me believe in wrestling.

One of the great things about these three men is that they treated the Intercontinental title like it was the most important title in the company. That's missing in today's wrestling in both WWE and Impact Wrestling.

5 GUYS THAT SHOULD BE CHAMPIONS IN IMPACT WRESTLING

Good Afternoon Class,

Today I want to look at 5 wrestlers that should be champions in IMPACT WRESTLING. In my opinion, it doesn't matter if they are World, TV, or X-Division champions, these guys can make the program exciting and fun to watch if given the right opponents and marketed correctly.

1. MATT MORGAN

(Courtesy of Google Images)

"The BluePrint" has been with Impact Wrestling since 2007 and has had great matches with the likes of Kurt Angle, A.J. Styles, Mr. Anderson, Sting, and Jeff Hardy. All these men have been World Champions but not Matt Morgan.  With his atleticism and size (he is 7-feet tall and 330lbs.) he could be the X-Division champion as well. He had title shots against Jeff Hardy in 2010 but was passed over by Imapct Wrestling management so that Mr. Anderson could win the title from Hardy. In 2009, at Impact Wrestling's October PPV, Bound For Glory, he had a match with Kurt Angle. That match could have been for the world title but Impact Wrestling promoters decided to take the title off of Angle a month earlier and put it on A.J. Styles. I always thought that was a mistake, because if Morgan had won the title from Angle at that event he would have been launched as a major star.

I hope that Impact Wrestling realizes what they have and places Morgan in a title program soon so that he can prove how valuable he is to the company.

2. JAMES STORM

(Courtesy of Google Images)

The "Tennesse Cowboy" has been with Impact Wrestling since its inception in 2002. He has been a multi-time tag champion with Chris Harris and Bobby Roode. He can cut a great promo and he definitely appeals to people of all ages. He's a guy who likes to drink beer and fight and who doesn't like a guy like that? He had a great match with Kurt Angle on Impact last week and he is surely a top draw no matter what title he holds.

3. CRIMSON

(Courtesy of Google Images)

Since entering Impact Wrestling, Crimson(Tommy Mercer) has been a force. Impact Wrestling has given him a great push with his undefeated streak and feuds with top stars like Abyss and Samoa Joe. Due to his size (he is 6 foot 6, 260 lbs.), strength, and badass look, he has great fan support. It wouldn't surprise me to see the X-Division or Tag-Team title around his waist in 3-4 months.

4. The Pope

(Courtesy of Impact Wrestling)

"The Pope" (Elijah Burke) is one of the most charismatic people in Impact Wrestling. His promo style is great and it reminds me of a mix between Dusty Rhodes and Randy Savage. Recently Pope has been in some lackluster feuds with Samoa Joe and now Brother Devon as the bad guy. He is much better as a good guy and deserves a World title or X-Division title run.

5. Austin Aries

(Courtesy of Google Images)

The former Ring of Honor World Champion and current Impact Wrestling X-Division champion is currently in a feud with Brian Kendrick but I'd rather see him in a feud with any of the four men listed above on this list. Those feuds would really make Impact interesting. Aries has been wrestling for over a decade and is one of the best wrestlers in the world. Any feud that he's in will be excellent when he's the antagonist. Despite being a small wrestler (He's about 5'10 and 220 lbs.) he can hold his own against anyone and could be the Impact Wrestling world champion.

Hopefully Impact Wrestling will see the potential in these men and use them to make their company more marketable and their storylines more interesting. These 5 guys are the future of Impact Wrestling and the business itself.

"THOR" MOVIE REVIEW

(Image Courtesy of Google Images and Marvel)

Hello Class, Today I'd like to review "THOR":

I watched "THOR" this past weekend and thought it was an amazing movie. Each member of the main cast fit their roles perfectly. Chris Hemsworth carried this movie extremely well and made me believe he was Thor.

Anthony Hopkins was wonderful as Odin and inhabited the character's wisdom, passion, anger, and love during that film.

Chris Hemsworth did the same thing as Thor. In the beginning of the film, you feel his arrogance and cockiness and you see his personality change throughout the film once he disobeys his father and is stripped of his powers. He has to become a worthy hero and you can see that journey throughout the film.

The love story between Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Thor was wonderful to watch. It was sweet and sincere. It reminded me of the romance between Superman and Lois Lane in Superman: The Movie.

I recommend this movie to anyone. You don't have to be a huge fan of superheroes or Sci-Fi to enjoy this movie.

KURT ANGLE AND BOBBY ROODE AT BFG

This is Robert Roode. At TNA's October PPV he will face Kurt Angle for the TNA IMPACT WRESTLING World Title. Roode has all the skills to be a good world champion. He's strong, athletic, and can wrestle with anyone on the roster. The question will be: Can he defeat arguably the greatest wrestler of all time, Kurt Angle.

Kurt Angle may be the greatest wrestler in the history of the sport. He is a 13-time world champion. He is an Olympic Gold Medalist from the 1996 Olympics. His performances in the ring have brought credibility and excitement to the ring.

Robert Roode is a man who is hungry for the title and has been in TNA since 2004. At Bound For Glory he could realize his dream.

END OF AN ERA

(Image Courtesy of Google Images and DC Comics)

On August 31st, DC Comics will relaunch its comic book line with "The new 52" but before that happens I wanted to write about how I got into comics.

It was the fall of 2004. I had graduated from college that Summer and like most graduates I didn't know what my next step was. I had my degree in TV production but I no idea how to break into the business.

My mom who knew I had an interest in writing my own scripts, decided to buy some comics one day, hoping that would spark my creativity. The comics she brought home were Superman/Batman 4, 5, and 6.

(Image Courtesy of Google Images and DC Comics)

I couldn't believe what I saw. Batman and Superman were muscular and ripped and could chew through you in a minute. The art by Ed McGuiness was pretty incredible. All the characters popped off the page as you read through the story.

The story itself was excellent as well. Jeph Loeb(writer of the movies "Teen Wolf" and "Commando") was culminating a story that was started in the "Superman" comic where Lex Luthor had become president of the U.S. during the 2000 Presidential election.

There was a big meteor of Kryptonite heading for earth and Luthor blamed Superman as the cause. Batman joined with Superman to find out how to stop the meteor and they are both considered Public Enemies of the U.S.

Luthor placed a one million dollar bounty on Superman's head for anyone who could bring him in. Subsequently, every supervillain comes out to collect the reward on Superman.

If you ever want to read the whole story, there is a trade paperback and hardcover book entitled, "Superman/Batman: Public Enemies."

With this story I became an avid comic book reader and I have stayed one for close to a decade. Now with this new initiative, I feel that maybe I should stop for a while and concentrate on creating my own characters.

I'll still pick up a comic or two along the way. I'm really excited to read "The Bionic Man" by Kevin Smith.

So for now I say thanks to DC and Marvel for giving me many years of inspiration and happiness. I hope one day a character that I've created can do the same for someone.

UFC MOVES TO FOX, FX

(Image of Jon "Bones" Jones-UFC Light Heavyweight Champion courtesy of Google Images)

According to an article in USA Today which you can read here, UFC is moving its programming from Spike TV to FOX, FX, and FUEL in 2012.

UFC will air programs like "The Ultimate Fighter" on FX and FUEL and have four specials during the year broadcast on FOX.

This is a big deal for UFC which will be able to expand its audience through the use of both FX and FOX.

Now Dana White and the UFC will truly be a competitor to Vince McMahon and the WWE.

SUPERMAN NEEDS FIGHTING SKILLS

BATMAN, WOLVERINE, THOR, WONDER WOMAN all have one thing in common: They're trained fighters and they can beat people up.

Superman doesn't have any special training. All he has is his powers. The general feeling is that once his powers are taken away then Superman is ineffective. This is shown to be true in Superman 2 when Superman gives up his powers to be with Lois. Lois and Clark drive to a diner from the fortress of Solitude and while Clark is using the bathroom a truck driver hits on Lois. When Clark goes to defend her, he is beaten up you can see the scene here: Supeman 2: Clark is not the man Lois fell in love with.

While the scene in the movie demonstrates to Clark what it's like to be human, comic book fans realized that Superman was nothing with out his superpowers.

Over the years heroes like Batman, Wolverine, and now Thor are seen as cooler because with or without powers they can do something to protect the innocent. Now even Spider-Man due to the loss of his spider sense has learned Kung-Fu.

The whole "Thor" movie was marketed as an action flick where Thor even without his powers was kicking @$$.

(Image courtesy of capedwonder.com and Google Images)

Even in the early days of the 1950's show, "The Adventures of Superman" George Reeves beat up the bad guys. It gave Superman credibility and now he can't hit anybody because logically if he hit someone they would die.

The new Superman movie will have more action and will be grittier but I think that if DC really wanted to get Superman to reach the level of Batman then they would give him some fighting skills so that it shows fans that Superman is more than just the powers.

"MAN OF STEEL" MOVIE NEWS

So we finally have the first image of Henry Cavill as Superman. The "S" on the suit seems to be similar to the Jim Lee Superman design in the comics as seen in the image below. It makes me wonder if the new look for Superman in September was inspired by the upcoming movie.

In other Superman news, Laurence Fishburne has been cast as Perry White, the editor of the Daily Planet.

Traditionally this role has been played by caucasian actors in the past such as Frank Langella ("Superman Returns") the late, great Jackie Cooper (in the Christopher Reeve "Superman" movies) and the late, great Lane Smith (in the "Lois and Clark" TV show). Despite the change of racial background, I have no problem with Fishburne as Perry and I wonder how he'll interpret the role.

THE BIONIC MAN

On August 31, 2011 The Bionic Man returns. Not to TV but in Dynamite Comics. Kevin Smith, the director behind such hits like CLERKS, CLERKS 2, MALLRATS, and JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK wrote a movie script adaptation of the "Six Million Dollar Man" TV show in 1998.

The executives at the time dismissed the script because it was too much like a comic book. Now Kevin Smith and Dynamite are adapting that script into a comic book. See the press release on Newsarama at this link: http://www.newsarama.com/comics/kevin-smith-bionic-man-110512.html

I was born in 1982, so I missed "The Bionic Man" when it first debuted. However, I did see Lee Majors and Lindsay Wagner ("The Bionic Woman") in many of their subsequent TV movies.

As a fan of comic books and Kevin Smith, I can't wait to see what he does with this concept. And who knows, this may lead to the "Six Million Dollar Man" coming back to TV. If it does let's hope that it's better than "The Bionic Woman" remake they did in 2007.

WWE: WHO IS THE REAL WWE CHAMPION?

Rey Mysterio won the WWE title last night in a great tournament final match against The Miz. Rey was defintely the star of the show and proved why he is one of the most enduring superstars ever in pro wrestling. Not just because of his high-risk style but because he can wrestle anyone and have a good matrch.

Mysterio's reign would not last though, as he would go on to lose the title to John Cena later on in the show after Triple H (The new "WWE COO") set up a match between the two.

This was a great match. No big hype. No over developed storyline. Just two guys who respect each other and both want to be WWE Champion, BUT THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE (Highlander reference).

After Cena won the title, CM PUNK came out and stood in the ring with Cena with both men holding belts.

Punk is holding the belt he won from Cena at Money In The Bank and Cena is holding the new belt that he just won from Mysterio. The common thought is that these guys will fight at Summerslam on August 19th to determine who is "the real world champion."

This is really a great angle. It has great opportunity to be the biggest storyline of the year.

I've covered this storyline from the beginning so check out these other blogs I've written if you need to get caught up:
