George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, Tom Welling, and Brandon Routh. They all have one thing in common: They've all played Superman at one time or another. Most recently, Brandon Routh played it in "Superman Returns" and Tom Welling plays The Man of Steel in "Smallville." The real point of this blog is to say how much I really miss the Superman that I grew up with.
I can't say exactly when I became a fan of Superman but I know I was young probably 5 or 6 when I first saw Chris Reeve as Superman fly through the air. I was hooked and Superman was and still is my favorite superhero. I say "Superhero" because my hero is my mom for everything she's done and continues to do for me.
But Superman is my favorite superhero. Yeah I like Batman, Spiderman and Iron Man but Superman is "The Man" in my eyes. But as of late, the Superman that I know and love has not been seen for awhile. In the comics he has been saving Kryptonians from Brainiac, forged a new krypton, engaged in a war of Kryptonians and now he is walking across American because he's lost touch with the American people.
I'd like to give a newsflash to DC COMICS: The reason Superman loses touch with the American people is because you write him that way. Besides Clark Kent is the one people should connect to. If they only kept the course that John Byrne laid out in the 80's (Superman: The Man of Steel) then Superman would be great. At that time Clark was trying to find a balance between his life as Clark and as Superman. It was about as real and as natural as you could get for a comic book. He was a man of action who took control of his destiny.
It seems that now people are so into finding new villains for "Superman" to fight that they've forgotten about Clark Kent. You know the guy who is Superman. I know that most people would say, "Clark is the disguise and Superman is the real man" but I disagree. Clark creates the Superman persona so that he can have a regular life and help where he's needed. This is most evident in the pilot episode of "Lois and Clark: The New Adventurtes of Superman."
Even in today's television, Superman isn't the Superman we know and love yet. Smallville has taken 10 years to do what most Superman shows have done in a few episodes. Make Clark Superman. In Smallville Clark has been indecisive, whiny, and sometimes annoying. But all in all the writers there do try to make him as heroic as possible. Although the 1950's George Reeves Superman would bitch slap this Clark Kent.
I hope we get a Superman soon or at least in the next movie that has all the qualities you love about Superman: Decisiveness, Strength of character, charity, humility, and all the awesome powers.
In my next blog I'll go into why I love Superman the most.
Later,
"The Professor"
